In 2015 I had a bi-weekly streaming ‘radio’ show on numbers.fm called The Institute for Implied Imperfection, where I would have various local musicians over to my studio to improvise live to air. On one such occasion, I was joined by dirty new media provocateur, glitch artist, and slow electronics enthusiast Jon Cates. Jon arrived with a copy of David Lynch’s Wild At Heart, which he wanted us to use as inspiration and influence for the afternoon’s experimentation. We set up around the screen, Jon with his laptop full of extremely slowed recordings, various bit crushers and feedback devices, myself with a pile of analog and digital electronics, many of which were connected to the display we were watching the film on with light controlled resistors, allowing the film itself to manipulate various parameters of my devices. The audio presented here is a document of that afternoon’s performance. I’m still not quite sure still if this recording constitutes an alternate soundtrack
for the film or an audio disruption of it, but then there’s also no real need for it to be either.
The title of this piece was taken from a description of a small goof in the film, where a boom mic and its operator can briefly be seen.
Thank you David Lynch for your films, the sharing of your strange dreams, your inspiration, your influence.
